Cultivation of TULSI - Emerging Trend to Combat POLLUTION

As per our Saints and ancient texts, Tulsi is a divine plant that acts as the panacea for all problems from cosmic to cosmetic.

Apart from its antioxidant, antibacterial, and adaptogenic properties and various medicinal uses, the Tulsi plant is extremely beneficial for addressing environmental issues these days.

What is Unique about the Tulsi Plant?

A technical article by an eminent botanist Shyamkant Padoley [2], reveals that “Tulsi has got specific enzyme, CYCLO-OXYGENASE, which causes continuous emission (24x7) of oxygen & formation of Ozone through the pericyclic mechanism.”

The controlled greenhouse experiments proved that a single plant of Tulsi (Ocimum Sanctum) can release 0.09 mi of OXYGEN per hour and 0.006 mi of OZONE and can replace the Pollutants by absorbing 0.08 mi per hour.

This unique characteristic of Tulsi makes it a wonder plant. Today, when the world is suffocating under the effects of air pollution through poisonous gases this property of Tulsi makes it valuable and important.

Tulsi a Boon for Environment

It has been experimentally proven that one Tulsi plant can keep an area with a radius of 100 sq. ft clean and non-polluted for 24 hours.

Tulsi employs a unique mechanism of continuously producing oxygen, ozone, and the vapors of essential oils, making it a plant that replaces and absorbs pollutants, thereby rendering the air pollution-free.

Tulsi releases oxygen for 20 hours and ozone for 4 hours a day, along with the formation of nascent oxygen, which absorbs harmful gases like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide from the environment.

It is now a proven fact that the Tulsi plant is a natural anti-pollutant. It can purify the area slowly without disturbing the natural equilibrium, providing an anti-pollutant atmosphere and a fresh cyclic dose of oxygen.

Tulsi for Better Environment Conditions

It has been well established that Tulsi can be used in cities to combat air pollution. Hundreds and thousands of Tulsi plants have been planted around the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra to help protect the marble building from environmental pollution damage.

Sant Shri Asharamji Bapu is a revolutionary saint who has spread awareness of the environmental benefits of Tulsi through His discourses.

It is now widely accepted that Tulsi is one of the best plants to purify the environment. Dr. Dattatraya Saraf, an Ayurvedic doctor and expert, also accepts the validity of this theory. He further added that the benefit increases with the size of the Tulsi Plant.

Tulsi Plant – Need of The Hour

In an era where pollution and global warming have become top priorities for developed countries and the entire world, the promotion of tulsi cultivation is a boon for mankind. The United Nations has also raised various concerns about climate change due to increasing pollution.

The alarming levels of pollution (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO) in New Delhi, worsening at times, are known to everyone. To combat such high pollution levels, we must promote the plantation of Tulsi as much as possible.

Tulsi is a panacea for many incurable diseases and plays a vital role in purifying and sanctifying the environment. Today, science is surprised to discover the usefulness and characteristics of Tulsi, but our far-sighted saints and great men have been emphasizing the importance of Tulsi since ancient times. Their sole aim was to provide numerous spiritual and health benefits to society.

Tulsi Pujan Divas: Not Just an Initiative But a Global Reform

To share the spiritual, medicinal, and environmental benefits of the revered TULSI globally, Sant Shri Asharamji Bapu, a distinguished spiritual leader, Guru, and founder of Shri Yog Vedant Sewa Samiti, initiated the expansive movement called Tulsi Pujan Divas in 2014, marked by celebrations on December 25th annually.

Evolved into a global festival, this movement aims to raise awareness about Tulsi through widespread initiatives such as distributing Tulsi saplings, organizing Tulsi Pujan in schools and colleges worldwide, disseminating informative pamphlets, and conducting extensive campaigns across various media platforms.

Beyond enlightening the world about Tulsi's significance, the event actively contributes to a healthier environment by distributing Tulsi plants, thus paving the way for a better future and a safer ecological landscape.

Vrinda Campaign (Plant Tulsi in Every Home):

For over 55 years, with the inspiration of Pujya Bapuji, Tulsi plants have been distributed free of cost, making people aware of the medicinal and religious importance of Tulsi. Tulsi is also planted in public places such as schools, colleges, hospitals, parks, etc. The Vrinda campaign (plant Tulsi in every home) is conducted across the country.
